Advice For Updating Mesa on 18.04 For Steam Proton?

So I'm looking to install Steam and use Steam's Proton on my Lenovo Laptop that has an Intel Graphics card. I haven't messed around with Intel or AMD Graphics before due to only owning machines with NVIDIA cards before getting this laptop. As stated on the Wiki for Proton they recommend installing recent versions of Mesa and LLVM from this ppa. I've also seen that some people have said to upgrade the kernel before doing this. Over at omgubuntu they've said not to use the ppa. I'm so confused. Is it safe to update the Mesa drivers from this ppa? Again I've never worked with AMD or Intel cards till now. Any advice? Thanks!

Using the glxinfo | grep "OpenGL version" command I found out that I'm using Mesa 18.2.8
